With our own quarries and long term agreements, Minera Skifer has unique access to quality resources of quartzite and phyllite. We have quarries in Alta, Oppdal and Otta in Norway, and Offerdal in Jämtland, Sweden. The company’s headquarter and Sales/Marketing department are in Oppdal, Norway, in addition to partners throughout the world. Every year Minera Skifer has sales totalling over 185 million kroner, to customers in more than 25 different countries. The company has approx. 200 highly skilled employees within the production and marketing of schists. Our experience from large and small projects, both at home and abroad, means we would be happy to help you, regardless of how large or small your project may be.
The schists from the above named districts are considered to be of high quality. For this reason they have been used for a wide range of prestige projects around the world.
Prestige projects
Among other things, the exclusive watchmaker and jewellers Cartier has used Otta phyllite in 50 of its stores. Minera Skifer has also delivered quartzite to the Louvre art gallery in Paris as well as 10 000 square metres for the new airport in Leipzig. In 2003 the Boston Public Library won the prize for the best façade in the USA from the architecture organisation the AIA. Tautra Mariakoster in Frosta was deemed the Year’s Best Building in 2006.
Long traditions
Norwegian schist is a very hard-wearing material. Geologically, Norwegian schist types are quartzite and phyllite, which are several hundred million years old. As a result of these deposits the schist are a well-known product with a long tradition in Norway. Norwegian schist products also stand for quality, which is to a large extent superior to most comparable products.
Minera Skifer has also developed a brushing technique for schist. The brushed quartzite and phyllite are fantastic to walk on and beautiful to look at. They are also much easier to wash, as the edges of the slates are smoothed down. This technique makes the schists even more suitable for indoor use.
